Jaffna Central College will meet St. John's College in the second oldest annual cricket match of school’s cricket known as “Battle of the North” started off today in a grand scale at Jaffna Central college's play ground. This year it will be the 106th encounter played between the under 19 teams of the two schools.

This is considered as the second big match playing for 3 days in Sri Lanka. This year the match will be played on March 08, 09 & 10 at the Jaffna Central College ground.

The big matches between the schools of St. Thomas College Mt. Lavinia Vs Colombo Royal College and Matara St. Servatius' College Vs Matara St. Thomas College have the oldest history. Battle of the North also has the oldest history next to these matches and has been played since 1901.

In the 105-year history of `Battle of the North’ cricket encounter, Jaffna St. John’s college won 33 matches and Central won 27 encounters. Thirty seven matches ended in a draw. One match was abandoned due to unavoidable circumstances.

For the last nine years, 50 over – limited over matches are also has been played between the two schools. Central College had won 06 matches and St. John’s college won 03 encounters.

This year T.Kogulan leads Central College and J.Agriyan leads St.John’s College teams respectively.

It should be noted that the tranquility of the Jaffna peninsula has changed a lot in the past years since end of hostilities in 2009. Now people of Jaffna enjoy a peaceful atmosphere in their home town. During last two years, old boys of these schools and other cricket fans from various places in the country and abroad visited Jaffna to enjoy this match.
